how to choose the frames: some indication
This is the english version of my heading "L'architetto dei bambini" in Viva la mamma, the Maria Nigo's blog.
Even the prints, drawings and photos adorn the spaces dedicated to children and young people (especially teenagers like to cover every inch of free wall, cabinets and doors, with their shots). The frame, regardless of image, as well as enhance the lines and colors, average visually the passage relating it to the wall with the whole context. How to choose it?
The are several factors to consider, among them also the size of the wall which can affect the composition of the frames -a subject larger or smaller subject; a regular or irregular provision, etc.- but I will describe a few simple rules still apply for everyone.
First, must be clear the final effect: romantic, cheerful, pop or ...?
Is clear, however, that each effect is not related to the furniture. A room furnished with the clean lines can be just as romantic furnished with a more "classic" as it can be just as cheerful as furnished with contemporary furniture. The final effect is the result of the combination of all elements.
It is important to consider the subject. Whether it's a photo, a drawing, a print or a collage. there are three possible choices: choose a neutral setting, for example, light wood or white, which enhances the subject; choose a frame color that interacts with the subject by invoking one of its colors; choose a frame in contrast to the subject as, for example, a light blue frame (or colored) for a black and white photo. The important thing here is that there is a clear mat. It is better to use it for small formats because it gives light and breath to the subject. For large formats is not always necessary.
The material to prefer is the natural wood, colored with non-toxic paints. It is important remove the glass or to use plastic for the frames positioned in the spaces dedicated to children, especially when they are placed at the bed or couch or in any of those points in which children tend to stay more.
With regard to the size and shape there may be whims. You can also reuse the frames as the most challenging ones, for example, in "Baroque" covered with gold leaf, associating them with a drawing or to print in a colored or repainted with bright colors. In short: space for fantasy!
A practical suggestion to align artwork's frame
Use white cardboard. Draw the outline of the composition The height (A), width (a) and distance (B, b) between all frames. Highlight the points that will serve as a guide to plant the hooks for paintings. Attach the cardboard to the wall with tape making sure the ends are the same height above the floor.
Pull the card after you have planted all the hooks.
